Role:

Design Researcher/Data Analyst

  • Discovered key insights from interviews which led us to include organizational culture in the Engagement Suite (figure 1).

  • Implemented KPIs and balanced scorecard prototypes as standard processes (figure 2).

  • Developed the Nonprofit Model Canvas which allowed us to determine RAP’s value proposition, infrastructure and financial structure.

  • Responsible for chapter 2 of the final book: research & insights.

  • Revised context and grammar of final book.

Skills:

Business Model Design, KPI Implementation, Agile & Scrum Project Management, Prototyping, Ethnographic Research, Workshop Facilitation, Data Analysis, Data Visualization, Consulting, Teamwork, Storytelling, Presentation, Book Editing

Goal:

Work closely with our client, RAP, to understand and utilize design for business model innovation. RAP’s overall goal was to create effective systems that measure impact and increase internal and external engagement from all stakeholders. Our goal was to transition their existing situation into a desired one.

Thinking Process:

The Strategic Design Process (figure 3).

Quantifying qualitative data

I gathered over 100 quotes from stakeholder interviews, highlighted key topics/patterns and then quantified that data to help our client see where the challenge is.

The Strategic Design Process

As a team, we explored the overlap between business and design. Additionally, we tested and compared many different visualization tools, followed the design process and used scrum and agile methods of project development.

Results:

Our insights led us to realize that for RAP to establish effective systems that measure impact and increase internal and external engagement from all stakeholders, they must have a clearly developed story base that is communicated to all stakeholders.

We developed two final solutions that focus on utilizing data more effectively and that clearly communicate a unified story base. The solutions aim to provide low-cost integrated systems for RAP, resulting in high impact for the youth they serve. The final product was delivered to our client in the form of a book, which includes our step by step process, tools, and solutions. Solution 1: 3x3 Engagement Suite

The suite uses three techniques that impact three key areas: data, culture and story. It will create effective ways of utilizing current and new data in order to develop strategies for short and long-term engagement.

Solution 2: Impact Model

To formulate a proposal aimed at enhancing RAP’s future impact, we initiated the development of an Impact Model for measurement. Our approach began with assembling a Nonprofit Model Canvas, which enabled us to define RAP’s value proposition, infrastructure, and financial structure. This foundational understanding then informed our recommendations for refining RAP’s mission and theory of change, alongside a comprehensive measurement plan designed to support their endeavors.
